Octo: A Modern and Sustainable Pendant Lamp

Creating Light and Minimizing Waste

Octo is a pendant lamp designed by Daniela Morales Cantú that combines modern aesthetics with sustainable principles. Inspired by the current global situation, Octo aims to minimize waste while providing a stylish lighting solution. This unique design draws inspiration from Dieter Rams' principles of design, resulting in a lamp that is not only visually appealing but also environmentally conscious.

Octo stands out as a pendant lamp that explores the concept of modern lighting. Its design consists of eight panels that form an octagon, supported by an inner metal structure. The geometric pieces create a visually striking combination that conveys a sense of strength, while the use of contrasting materials adds texture and depth to the design. Octo's intuitive design allows for easy assembly, making it a user-friendly lighting solution.

The lamp shade of Octo is made from recycled industrial felt or leather, which adds to its sustainable nature. The use of these materials not only reduces waste but also contributes to the lamp's unique aesthetic. The metal structure of Octo is made from aluminum, ensuring durability and stability. The lamp's components, including the light source and covers, can be conveniently stored in a compact flat packaging, making it easy to transport and reducing its carbon footprint.

Interacting with Octo is a seamless experience for the user. Upon receiving the lamp, the user simply needs to assemble the pieces, which can be done in less than a minute. From taking it out of its flat packaging to joining the covers with the interior structure and adding the light source, Octo's assembly process is straightforward and hassle-free.

The development of Octo was a result of extensive research and analysis. The design underwent an EcoDesign analysis, which involved evaluating various factors such as materials, manufacturing processes, packaging, and transport. This comprehensive approach ensured that Octo adheres to sustainable practices throughout its lifecycle, incorporating circular economy principles into its design.

Despite the challenges faced during the development of Octo, including language barriers and cultural differences, Daniela Morales Cantú successfully created a lamp that embodies both functionality and sustainability. The project was carried out from February to May 2018 at Howest University in Kortrijk, Belgium.

Octo's innovative design has garnered recognition in the design community. In 2019, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Octo's incorporation of sustainable practices and its contribution to a better world make it a deserving recipient of this accolade.

Octo is not just a pendant lamp; it is a testament to the possibilities of combining modern design with sustainability. With its striking aesthetic, easy assembly, and eco-friendly features, Octo is a lighting solution that appeals to both design enthusiasts and environmentally conscious individuals.
